Academic conference “Oppositional Engagement of Women in Authoritarian and Totalitarian Systems of the 20th Century: Poland in a Comparative European Perspective (1919–1989)”

The second academic conference in a series “Oppositional Engagement of Women in Authoritarian and Totalitarian Systems of the 20th Century: Poland in a Comparative European Perspective (1919–1989)” brought together representatives of various fields of the humanities and social sciences from numerous research centers in Poland and abroad.

The aim of the three-day international conference was to create a space for interdisciplinary reflection on women’s strategies for resistance, their social and political contexts, the consequences of oppositional activities and the memory of these experiences. The participating scholars analyzed and discussed the fates of both individual women and entire women’s groups who engaged in the opposition movement against authoritarian and totalitarian rule and were deemed dangerous by the authorities of the time. Non-democratic systems developed extensive mechanisms of control, violence and repression, which particularly affected women. The conference provided an opportunity to share insights about the functioning of the power apparatus and its methods of coercion, with a special emphasis on surveillance, blackmail, administrative pressure, political and economic repression, as well as arrest, imprisonment and deportation.

The papers covered various aspects of women’s experiences connected with the emergence of authoritarian systems in Europe after 1918 and during the Second World War, the oppositional engagement of women after 1945, and their political and social resistance to the realities imposed by totalitarian systems in 20th-century Europe. The thematic panels discussed, among others, the forms and methods of resistance to the authorities, women’s agency manifesting itself in oppositional engagement, and activities expressing dissent against the order implemented by the regime in non-democratic systems.

Considerable attention was paid to women who have hitherto been underrepresented in the academic discourse, including so-called secondary historical figures and intellectuals from the educational, academic and artistic milieus. Individual experiences served to paint a broader picture of the complex fates of participants in systemic change and women who fought against authoritarian and totalitarian systems, expressing their dissent both in spectacular, highly visible ways and through more subtle means of soft opposition.

The speakers combined microhistorical analyses with broad transnational comparisons, basing their findings on various source materials from Polish and foreign archives and libraries. In total, more than 60 papers were delivered during the conference, including panel presentations, concluding remarks by moderators and daily summaries by the academic committee. During the three days of debate, thematic sessions and panel discussions, the participants demonstrated the significance of the topic and the need for further research into the history of women in the 20th century, especially as regards the biographies of individual women involved in the opposition, their daily lives and motivations behind adopting various stances of resistance to the authoritarian and totalitarian realities.

    Marta Cienkowska, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, has appointed Karol Madaj Director of the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor in Warsaw.     The Volhynian Crime: The Pilecki Institute and its scholarly and research activities

    On the Sunday of 11 July 1943, units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the armed wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Stepan Bandera faction) – a radical fascist organization striving to build an independent Ukrainian state without any national minorities – carried out a coordinated attack on almost a hundred Polish settlements in the German-occupied Volhynian Voivodeship of the Second Polish Republic.
