The commemoration of Stanisław and Marianna Siniarski and their children, who were murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation

On 10 March 2024 in Lutkówka in Mazovia, on the 80th anniversary of the tragic events, the Pilecki Institute commemorated Stanisław and Marianna Siniarski and their children: Marian, Irena and Edward, who were murdered by the Germans together with the Jews whom they were sheltering: Wolf Lipszyc, Chana and their newborn son.

On 3 December 2023 in Łańcut, as part of the “Called by Name” program, the Pilecki Institute commemorated Aniela Nizioł who was murdered for aiding Jews during the German occupation. This was our 35th event commemorating the victims – Jews designated for annihilation and those who lost their lives because they attempted to help them.

The commemoration of Zofia and Aleksander Kur

On 21 September 2023, in Gamratka near Mińsk Mazowiecki, as part of the “Called by Name” program, the Pilecki Institute commemorated Zofia and Aleksander Kur, who were murdered on 27 July 1943 by German gendarmes for helping three Jewish escapees from the ghetto in Mińsk.

Unveiling of a plaque devoted to the CALLED BY NAME at the Museum of Poles Saving Jews in Markowa

On Sunday, 3 September 2023, at the Orchard of Remembrance at the Museum of Poles Saving Jews in World War II in Markowa (Subcarpathia), a plaque was unveiled to symbolically include the family of Wiktoria and Józef Ulma in the “Called by Name” program.

On 21 June 2023 in Somianka (Mazovia), a commemorative plaque was unveiled to honor Mieczysław Żemojtel, who was murdered by the Germans for helping Jews during the German occupation, and Anna Kowalska, whom he was helping. It was the 32nd commemoration organized as part of the “Called by Name” program.

On 29 November 2022, the Pilecki Institute, together with the residents and authorities of Rzeszów, commemorated Michał Stasiuk, Righteous Among the Nations, who was murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation.

On 29 September 2022 in Majdan Nowy, the Pilecki Institute “called by name” seven residents who were murdered by the Germans on 29 December 1942 in a retaliation action. The Jews whom they were helping were also commemorated.

On 15 September 2022 in Chmielnik (Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship), the Pilecki Institute commemorated Marianna Stradowska and her son Wacław, who were sentenced to death by the Germans for helping five Jews. It was the 28th commemoration, as part of which two more people – heroes who risked and, ultimately, sacrificed their lives to rescue others – were “called by name”.

Third Meeting of the “Called by Name” Families

On 2 September 2022 in Łochów, we began a two-day Third Meeting of the “Called by Name” Families. More than a hundred people attended this special meeting – the oldest participants were over 90 years old, while the youngest one was less than 2 years old. There were 21 new participants at this year’s meeting.

On 24 March 2022, the National Day of Remembrance of Poles Rescuing Jews under German Occupation, in Brzóza Królewska, we commemorated Katarzyna and Sebastian Kazak, who were shot along with three Jews by German gendarmes in 1943.

Jan Maletka commemorated in the village of Treblinka

On 25 November, Railway Workers’ Day, the Pilecki Institute commemorated Jan Maletka in the village of Treblinka. The date was not chosen without reason: the victim worked on the railway, and was murdered for giving water to Jews being transported into the death camp.

The Pilecki Institute commemorated Leokadia Piątkowska, who was murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation, as well as Mendel Klein and an unnamed Jewish man whom she tried to rescue.

During the 20th commemoration ceremony as part of the “Called by Name” project, we honored the memory of Antoni Kenigsman, who was murdered by the Germans in 1942 for aiding three Jews.

Tribute to Bolesław Książek

The Pilecki Institute honored the memories of Bolesław Książek and Idel, a Jewish boy whom he protected, both of whom were murdered by the Germans on 12 May 1943.

A Commemoration of Piotr Kościelecki

As part of the 18th commemoration in the “Called by Name” project, we honored Piotr Kościelecki, who was murdered by the Germans for helping Jews during the occupation. We also honored the murdered Jews, whose names remain unknown.

Piotr, Franciszek and Antoni Domański commemorated in Rzążew

The Pilecki Institute commemorated three residents of Rzążew, a father and two sons, who were murdered on 8 April 1943 for helping Jews during the German occupation.

A commemoration of Józef Pruchniewicz

On 23 March, we honored a resident of Biecz who was murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation. The 16th commemoration as part of the “Called by Name” project was closed to the wider public due to the pandemic.

Called by name | exhibition

The exhibition tells the story of people who were outlawed and murdered without trial simply because they helped those whom the occupiers considered “subhuman”. Years later, we can recall the faces of Poles murdered for rescuing Jews and give a voice back to their loved ones.

Tribute to the residents of Stary Lipowiec

The local residents could perfectly hear the screams coming from the house set ablaze by the Germans. Women and children perished there – six inhabitants of Aleksandrów and Stary Lipowiec and a young Jewish woman. Years later, the Pilecki Institute “called them by name”.

A commemoration of Karolina Juszczykowska

Karolina Juszczykowska, sentenced to death and executed for hiding Jews during the Second World War, was commemorated in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. This was the 14th commemoration ceremony held as part of the “Called by Name” project.

A commemoration of the Banaszek Family

Marianna, Władysław and Stanisława Banaszek, murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation, were commemorated in Marki near Warsaw. For the first time in the history of the project, contact was established with the descendants of the Survivors.

A commemoration of Zofia Krasuska and her son Boguś Krasuski

Zofia and Boguś Krasuski, murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation, were commemorated in Tworki near Siedlce. This was the last stone with a commemorative plaque to be unveiled before the summer vacations as part of the “Called by Name” project.

Franciszka and Józef Sowa commemorated in Wierzchowisko

We commemorated a family who helped a group of Jews escape from the Częstochowa ghetto and gave them shelter. After finding the hiding place, the Germans murdered both the rescued and the rescuers. Franciszka and Józef Sowa orphaned five children.

A commemoration of the eleven Poles murdered in Paulinów

Eleven Poles murdered for saving Jews during the war were commemorated by the Pilecki Institute on Thursday, 4 June, in Sterdyń. This was the tenth stone with a commemorative plaque unveiled as part of the project, which began in March 2019.

The “Called by Name” project is gaining momentum! As many as 65 people from the family of Franciszek Andrzejczyk came to Czyżew to honor the memory of their father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

A Commemoration of Władysława and Stanisław Krysiewicz

The couple were shot for hiding eight Jews. On Sunday, 6 October, in Waniewo near Białystok, we paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Krysiewicz and a plaque in their honor was unveiled.

Wacław Budziszewski commemorated for assisting Jews

On Sunday, 22 September 2019, the Pilecki Institute paid tribute to Wacław Budziszewski, murdered for providing assistance to Jews during the war. A memorial plaque was unveiled in the town of Nur near Ostrów Mazowiecka.

A Commemoration of the Postek Family

During the German occupation, the Postek family sheltered and nourished 17 Jews, for which they paid the highest price. On Sunday, 30 June 2019, the Pilecki Institute paid tribute to those murdered.

Jadwiga Długoborska and Lucyna Radziejowska were killed by the Germans for sheltering Jews. The Pilecki Institute introduced their stories to the world by commemorating them within the framework of the “Called by Name” project.

Aleksandra and Hieronim Skłodowski commemorated for assisting Jews

On Sunday, 16 June 2019, two people were commemorated in Skłody-Piotrowice within the framework of the project “Called by Name.” Aleksandra and Hieronim Skłodowski had been murdered by German gendarmes for helping Jews.
