The academic conference “Killing Intellectuals. European Intellectual Elites Under German Occupation, 1939-1945” was held in Austria on 7-9 May 2017. It proved an opportunity for a comparative look at the fates of the intelligentsia and intellectual elites in Europe under German occupation. The discussion was attended by scholars representing different countries, various disciplines of the humanities, and distinct intellectual traditions.
The Conference was conducted in three languages – Polish, English and German. All of the presentations can be viewed on the Center’s Facebook profile.
The objective of the conference was to reflect on the German crimes committed in the Warsaw district of Wola at the beginning of August 1944. It was then that the Germans killed approximately 50,000 people – men, women, and children – in a series of systematic executions of civilians.
