Post-war Dilemmas - Instytut Pileckiego

We invite you to a workshop that allows students to explore the challenges and history of a generation shaped by the Second World War.

“Post-war Dilemmas” is a biographical decision-making game in which participants attempt to confront the choices faced by generations of Poles in the first years after the end of the Second World War.

Successive cards guide players through the life of a protagonist whose biography is based on a real life story. Students must grapple with the dilemmas their character faced. Emigrate or remain in the country? Continue the struggle or begin quiet, positivist work? What matters more: duty or personal happiness? The fate of the character depends on the decisions made by the players. Each choice carries irreversible consequences. Students discuss their decisions and attempt to justify their choices.

Additional Material - Meeting with Herbert: “Elegy Of Fortinbras”

Workshops based on the “Post-war Dilemmas” game can be expanded to include sessions devoted to Zbigniew Herbert’s poem “Elegy of Fortinbras”. In our joint interpretation of the poem, we focus in particular on the confrontation between two human attitudes, or two political systems: that represented by Hamlet and that represented by Fortinbras. Finally, we reflect together on what historical reality may be concealed behind the Shakespearean setting.

Teachers and educators interested in receiving a copy of the game are asked to contact us at: edu@instytutpileckiego.pl
