A World of Inverted Values - Instytut Pileckiego

A World of Inverted Values

During workshops held throughout the exhibition - which tells the story of Poles murdered for helping Jews during the German occupation - students will learn about the realities of the occupation in Poland and the biographies of selected individuals commemorated as part of the “Called by name” program.

The workshops provide a better understanding of the complexity of social reality under occupation, including the tragic plight of Polish citizens of Jewish descent and the difficulty of the moral choices faced by ordinary Polish citizens—the main protagonists of the exhibition.

Supplementary material – Meeting with Herbert: Mr. Cogito on the Need for Precision

The workshops can be expanded to include activities based on Zbigniew Herbert’s poem “Mr. Cogito on the Need for Precision.” Together with the students, we interpret the poem, focusing in particular on what kind of precision the titular Mr. Cogito demands and what the poet describes as inhuman power. Finally, we reflect together on the excerpt from the poem that served as the exhibition’s motto:

count exactly

call by name

provide for the journey.

Duration of “The World of Reversed Values” - 90 minutes

Duration of the piece “Mr. Cogito on the Need for Precision” - an additional 45 minutes
