Łukasz Mieszkowski appointed deputy director of the Pilecki Institute
Minister of Culture and National Heritage Hanna Wróblewska has appointed Łukasz Mieszkowski deputy director of the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor, effective 1 February 2025.
Łukasz Mieszkowski is a historian specializing in the social, medical and military history of Poland in the first half of the 20th century; he is also an artist graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
He was awarded a Fulbright Commission scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently completing a thesis at the Polish Academy of Sciences’ “Anthropos” doctoral school on epidemic, sanitary and civic crises in the early days of the Second Polish Republic.
He is the author of “Tajemnicza rana. Mit czołgu-pułapki w powstaniu warszawskim”, which received a First Class award in Jan Józef Lipski competition for Master’s theses in history. The publication was also nominated for the History Award of the "Polityka" weekly magazine.
His artistic work includes the creation of exhibitions, as well as large and small architectural projects. The Museum and Memorial in Sobibór, which he designed, received the Sibyl award for museum event of the year in 2024 and the “European Museum of the Year Award 2024”. He is the creator of the monument to the Underground Warsaw Ghetto Archive, the Gerard Labuda Library in Wejherowo, and the Ukrainian war cemetery in Kalisz-Szczypiorno.

New Pilecki Awards Committee Appointed
Pursuant to the Regulations of the Competition and the Operating Regulations of the Awards Committee, on 1 April 2026, the Acting Director of the Pilecki Institute, Karol Madaj, appointed the Awards Committee for the 6th edition of the Witold Pilecki International Book Award. The eight-member Awards Committee includes three permanent members representing the Pilecki family, the Pilecki Institute, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, as well as members appointed each time by written decision of the Director of the Institute.
