2022 | Dr. Joanna Lubecka, "A German Criminal and the Polish Court. Proceedings Before the Supreme National Tribunal in Kraków"
Dr. Joanna Lubecka’s book [A German Criminal and the Polish Court. Proceedings Before the Supreme National Tribunal in Kraków] was awarded the Witold Pilecki International Book Award for the “best academic historical book” of 2022.
Were German criminals able to face fair trials in Poland under the Communist regime? Joanna Lubecka seeks an answer to this question by reconstructing the proceedings before the Supreme National Tribunal in Kraków in 1946–1948.
The author of the book Niemiecki zbrodniarz przed polskim sądem. Krakowskie procesy przed Najwyższym Trybunałem Narodowym (IPN, Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej, Kraków 2021) shows how lawyers educated before the war saw the German occupation as a systematic plan of terror and extermination, not just a chaotic series of crimes. With its wide-ranging approach, the book is a voice in the discussion of post-war settlements of German crimes in Europe.
The book won the prize for the best 2022 monograph on the Polish experience of the confrontation with two totalitarian regimes in the 20th century. The award was collected by Dr. Joanna Lubecka.
Dr. Joanna Lubecka works at the Institute of National Remembrance and the Ignatianum Academy in Kraków. She studies the history of the Third Reich and issues of collective memory and historical politics in contemporary Germany.
