The Memory of the Second World War: an Organizational Analysis
Why do certain events and historical topics find their way to the collective memory and quickly become its inherent part, while others do not, or are returned to memory only after many years?
Why do certain events and historical topics find their way to the collective memory and quickly become its inherent part, while others do not, or are returned to memory only after many years? How is the collective memory impacted by the physical demise of witnesses and the emergence of the “third” and “fourth” generations? And how and in what contexts is our memory of the past shaped and subjected to institutionalization?
The aim of the project is an analysis of the process of change taking place in the Polish collective memory of the Second World War. It poses questions concerning the role of organizations (and individuals) which by engaging in scientific research, establishing museums, creating places of memory, elaborating educational programs, developing new narratives for an interpretation of the past, and also mobilizing various types of resources strive to influence the shape of the collective memory.
