War Crimes and War Aims: the Allies, the UNWCC and the debate over postwar justice during the Second World War

This seminar will explore the context of the UNWCC within wider wartime debates over war aims, war crimes, and post-war justice.

The United Nations War Crimes Commission was set up during the Second World War in response to demands from the occupied nations, foremost Poland, that atrocities being carried out by the Axis occupiers be more than just condemned but countered in some meaningful way. Unwilling to commit to military solutions, Britain and the U.S. thus agreed to include post-war justice as a principle war aim – but only with great reluctance.

The panelist:

Dr. John Cornell, The Pilecki Institute

The online seminar in the form of a webinar will be held in English on zoom.us, with simultaneous translation into Polish available.
