Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century
We invite you to attend our online meeting, “Europe’s suburbs or a distinct region: Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century” with four renowned historians on the subject of a new synthesis of economic and social history in our part of the continent.
The starting point for the meeting is the draft of a new textbook “The Routledge History Handbook of Central and Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century. Volume 1: Challenges of Modernity”, which enables learning about the specifics of Central and Eastern Europe. It is the first of 4 parts of a cycle of a new synthesis of the region’s history, prepared at Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena. We will discuss the project, the concept of Central and Eastern Europe, and the challenges of modernity in our region.
- Does Central and Eastern Europe exists as a region in and of itself, or can is simple be considered “Europe’s suburbs”?
- What is “parachute” or “island” modernity, i.e. a situation where modernity encompasses individual companies or cities, often relying on foreign capital, without penetrating deeper in society?
- What were the breakthrough moments in the region’s history, and particularly in the censorship of the 1960s and 70s?
- What makes Poland exceptional in the 20th century with regard to the region?
These and other questions will be discussed by:
- prof. Włodzimierz Borodziej, Institute of Art History at the University of Warsaw;
- dr Stanislav Holubec, Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences;
- prof. Joachim von Puttkamer, Director of Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena;
- prof. Béla Tomka, Department of Modern History at the University of Szeged.
