Researchers from the Pilecki Institute at BASEES 2026 in Birmingham

On 10–12 April, the BASEES 2026 Annual Conference was held in Birmingham; the international academic meeting was organized by the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies.

The event was attended by representatives of the Pilecki Institute’s Center for Totalitarian Studies: Dr. Kinga Czechowska, Dr. Ian Garner, and Dr. Bartłomiej Kapica.

During the conference, the scholars presented papers on their research projects at the Institute. They also participated in discussion panels and debates accompanying the presentations of other speakers.

Dr. Ian Garner discussed the issue of violence in Russian internet discourse (An Ecology of Everyday Violence: Russian Telegram Discourse and War Atrocities in Ukraine) and analyzed how the “Great Patriotic War” narrative is reproduced on YouTube ((Re)Producing Russia’s “Great Patriotic War” Strategic Narrative on YouTube). He also took part in a panel discussion devoted to publishing in academic journals and books.

Dr. Bartłomiej Kapica examined how the Soviet Union was perceived by Polish émigré socialists after the Second World War (The Image of the Soviet Union in the Eyes of Polish Socialists in Exile, 1945–1948).

Dr. Kinga Czechowska analyzed the visions of postwar order proposed by the Polish Government-in-Exile (“As ecure as possible”: the Polish government-in-exile and its visions of Poland in a postwar world order).

The BASEES annual conferences are among the most important international academic forums for Central and Eastern European studies, covering historical, political, and cultural perspectives.
