Information concerning the 4th issue of the "Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies" yearbook
Between the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 and the spring of 1940, when Hitler shifted his attention to the military campaign against the West, Europe for the first time experienced a form of occupation and total war aimed specifically at the destruction of entire nations and societies. It was in Poland that the Nazi New Order was first implemented – a premonition of what was in store for the whole of Europe. Almost simultaneously, Poland was attacked by Germany’s ally, the Soviet Union, whose occupation policy involved mass deportations and repression. Further aggression from the USSR soon resulted in Soviet occupation in the Baltic states and much of Finland. This period may serve as a starting point for many of the issues touched upon in research on the history of World War II, and as the basis for defining notions relating to the war, occupation and genocide. The forthcoming issue of Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies will be devoted to the matters outlined above. We would like the 4th issue of our yearbook to tackle such problems as:
- policy and propaganda of the Third Reich and the Soviet Union in the years 1939–1940;
- the attitudes of the states and nations of Europe and the entire world towards the Third Reich and the Soviet Union at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s;
- German and Soviet occupation during the first stage of World War II (1939–1940);
- totalitarian ideologies and states and their reception;
- the first years of World War II and historical memory;
- German and Soviet crimes and repression in the years 1939–1940;
- historiography devoted to processes and events from the turn of the 1930s and 1940s: state of research, approaches, research proposals.
The editorial board of the Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies yearbook invites scholars to send articles exploring the above-mentioned issues (in Polish or English). Please attach an abstract to your text detailing the topic of the paper, a bibliography, five keywords and a short biographical note. The deadline for applications is 30 July 2020. The 4th issue will appear in print towards the end of 2020.
All selected articles will be translated into English and Polish by the translation team of the Pilecki Institute. The text should be no longer than 80,000 characters (spaces and footnotes included).
Please send your paper to: redakcja@instytutpileckiego.pl
