Library Databases

Our library provides access to the following databases:

ACADEMICA

Academica, a digital interlibrary lending facility of books and scholarly periodicals, is a service operated by the Polish National Library, offering access to resources which due to copyright protection are not openly available on the internet. Publications covered by copyright protection are accessible solely through a dedicated terminal located in the reading room of the Institute. This allows readers to peruse selected books and scholarly periodicals from the collections of the Polish National Library, including numerous monographs of critical scientific importance, articles from contemporary Polish scholarly periodicals, and a broad assortment of fiction. Academica also contains the holdings of the Polona open digital library.

ANCESTRY LIBRARY

Ancestry Library is one of the largest contemporary genealogical collections. Its holdings include, among others, censuses, vital records, Church, court and immigration registers, as well as photographs and genealogical trees from many regions of the world.

ARCHIVE FINDER

Archive Finder is a catalog of repositories and collections of source materials located in the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland. Designed as a research tool, it is a centralized collection of archival information containing descriptions of sources stored in various types of repositories.

Archive Finder gathers data from three main information sources: the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Repositories in the United States (DAMRUS), the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC), and the National Inventory of Documentary Sources in the United States (NIDS).

ARCHIVES OF THE PILECKI INSTITUTE

The Archives of the Pilecki Institute gather and provide access to documents in digital format. These concern the fates of Polish citizens who in the 20th century fell victim to the German and Soviet totalitarianisms. Further, we acquire digital copies of documents whose originals form part of the holdings of various Polish and foreign institutions, among others of the Bundesarchiv, the United Nations Archives, the British National Archives, and Polish state archives. The database also includes electronic books, some of which have been printed by the Institute’s own publishing house. The contents of these documents can only be accessed in the reading room.

Certain of the documents, for example those from the collections of the Bundesarchiv or the KARTA Center, are however subject to restrictions on availability pursuant to agreements concluded by the Institute with the respective institutions. In order to access these materials at our facility, it is necessary to appear at the Library in person and complete formalities by signing the appropriate declaration. Information concerning restrictions on availability may be found in the Library Regulations. Before visiting, we recommend that you acquaint yourselves with the scope and structure of our archival, library and audiovisual resources, and also with the Regulations governing the usage of holdings.

EBSCOHOST

EBSCOhost is a set of databases which together contain approximately 8,000 full-text periodicals and field-specific bibliographic-abstract databases. It is a useful source of information for authors of scholarly dissertations.

Our Library provides access to the following collections:

  • Academic Search Ultimate

The Academic Search Ultimate database offers a collection of scholarly reviewed, full-text periodicals, many of which are indexed in leading quotation indexes.

  • AGRICOLA

This database contains bibliographical records from the National Agricultural Library, which is operated by the US Department of Agriculture. The AGRICOLA database, whose chronological scope reaches back to 1970, contains more than 4,800,000 citations. These quotations are taken from articles printed in periodicals, monographs, scientific works, patents, software, audiovisual materials and technical reports concerning agriculture.

  • AHFS Consumer Medication Information

The AHFS Consumer Medication Information database is a trusted source and recognized standard for patient drug information, and is available in English and Spanish. The AHFS, which is published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, contains more than one thousand informational monographs devoted to drugs, written in a manner understandable for consumers. It is a Top Ten Award Winner in the National Consumer Education Materials Contest organized by the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Business Source Ultimate

The Business Source Ultimate database offers a wealth of scholarly reviewed, full-text periodicals and other resources containing both historical information and data on current business trends, which help further discussions on future development and change in the world of business.

  • eBook Collection (EBSCOhost)

A collection of electronic books purchased by the Library for the needs of employees and scholarship holders of the Institute.

  • ERIC

The ERIC – Education Resource Information Center – database is devoted to literature and educational resources. It contains more than 1,300,000 records and provides access to periodicals considered in the Current Index of Journals in Education and the Resources in Education Index.

  • European Views of the Americas: 1493 to 1750

This new bibliographical database constitutes a valuable index for libraries, scholars and all those interested in works written in Europe on the topic of the Americas. The resource was created by the company EBSCO Publishing, acting in co-operation with the John Carter Brown Library, on the basis of “European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to the Americas, 1493–1750”, an authoritative bibliography that is well known to and highly valued by scholars around the world. The database contains more than 32,000 items and constitutes a rich and detailed guide to printed records concerning both Americas that were written in Europe before 1750.

  • GreenFILE

The GreenFILE database contains information gathered during in-depth research into all aspects of man’s impact on the natural environment. It includes a collection of scientific, governmental and popular science publications concerning global warming, the creation of a friendly environment, environmental pollution, sustainable agricultural economy, renewable energy sources, recycling, and others. The database also provides open access to indexes and abstracts of more than 1,000,000 records, as well as to the full texts of over 15,000 publication records.

  • Health Source: Consumer Edition

This database is the largest collection of information on public health available to libraries world-wide. It covers numerous topics from the field of health, including the medical sciences, the food and nutrition sciences, childcare, sports medicine and general health. The Health Source: Consumer Edition contains approximately 80 full-text publications from the field of public health.

  • The Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition

This database comprises approximately 550 full-text scientific periodicals from many fields of medicine. The Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also provides access to the AHFS Consumer Medication Information guide, which contains 1,300 educational sheets for patients concerning generic drugs, with more than 4,700 names of proprietary products.

  • Historical Abstracts with Full Text

Historical Abstracts with Full Text is a unique collection, whose topical scope covers world history (excluding the US and Canada) from 1450, including fields such as global history, the history of military science, women’s history, the history of education, and numerous others. This highly reliable database contains an index of selected historical articles from more than 1,800 periodicals written in over 40 languages, which have been published since 1955. The Historical Abstracts with Full Text database includes more than 800,000 records and provides access to the full texts of in excess of 349 periodicals and 120 books; this means that it has no equal in terms of the number and scope of publications from the field of history and associated social sciences.

  • Jewish Studies Source

The Jewish Studies Source database contains more than 400 full-text titles. The sources comprising the collection include the full texts of leading scholarly periodicals in the field, monographs, associated articles from the most important periodicals and newspapers, and over 1,600 biographies of the most significant figures of Jewish history and contemporaneity. The database includes 123 full-text versions of journals and periodicals, among them 66 periodicals that are not available in Academic Search™. The Jewish Studies Source also offers a wealth of full-text archival files. Furthermore, it contains the entire Jewish Telegraphic Agency database, whose chronological span covers the years from 1922 to the present.

  • Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts

The Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) database indexes more than 560 leading topical periodicals, nearly 50 priority periodicals, and just under 125 selected periodicals; it also includes books and reports concerning the organization and course of research. Its topical scope covers library science, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, the online gathering of information and information management, etc. Its chronological scope goes back to the mid-1960s.

  • MasterFILE Premier

A multidisciplinary database created specifically for public libraries, it provides access to the full texts of nearly 1,700 periodicals, whose chronological span reaches back to 1975. The topical scope of MasterFILE Premier covers practically all fields of knowledge. The database also contains the full-text versions of nearly 500 reference books and in excess of 164,400 source documents, as well as a collection of images comprising more than 592,000 photographs, maps and flags. The database is updated daily through EBSCOhost.

  • MasterFILE Reference eBook Collection

This reference collection of electronic books offers a broad selection of titles from a wide range of general reference topics. Its topical scope covers biography, history, careers, cooking, literature, genealogy, health, parenthood, personal finances, politics, architecture, science, current affairs, socio-emotional health, sport and travel.

  • MEDLINE

MEDLINE contains authoritative information from the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science, health care systems, the preclinical sciences, and numerous others. Established by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE applies indexing according to the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) medical thesaurus, using the tree hierarchical structure, subordinate headers and the term expansion function to enable searching for records from more than 5,400 biomedical periodicals.

  • Newspaper Source

The Newspaper Source database offers complete, full-text versions of more than 40 American and international newspapers. The database also contains full-text versions of selected articles from 389 regional newspapers published in the US. Further, it provides access to full-text transcripts of radio and television programs.

  • Regional Business News

This database contains the full-text materials of regional business publications. Regional Business News includes more than 80 business publications devoted to all municipal and rural areas of the United States. Click here to display a full list of titles. Click here to display more information.

  • Teacher Reference Center

The Teacher Reference Center database provides access to indexes and abstracts of the 280 most popular journals and periodicals for teachers and carers, which facilitate the work of educationalists.

IBUK LIBRA

IBUK Libra is the largest Polish full-text database of academic handbooks and scientific literature. The platform provides access to the electronic publications and educational resources of the PWN Group and a few hundred other publishers. The book collection of the virtual reading room contains thousands of specialist, scientific, popular science and fictional publications produced by the leading Polish publishing houses. Many of these titles are unavailable in other databases, thus making IBUK Libra’s offering unique. Its state-of-the-art technology and round the clock availability mean that readers can use the platform at any time and from any location, not only to read books, but also to carry on advanced work on texts.

JSTOR

JSTOR is an electronic archive of scholarly periodicals that provides access to titles from a great many academic disciplines. The database includes historical time series of periodicals – some of which stretch back to the first editions (17th – 18th century) – however to the exclusion of current issues. The so-called moving wall refers to the time interval between the most recent published booklet and the last booklet made available in JSTOR, ranging from 3 to 5 years. The entire resource is grouped into a number of topical collections.

LEGIMI

Legimi is a virtual book collection comprising thousands of e-books and audiobooks of specialist, scientific, popular science and fictional publications.

PROQUEST ONE ACADEMIC

ProQuest One Academic is a set of databases containing numerous full-text periodicals, books and field-specific bibliographic-abstract databases. It is a useful source of information for authors of scholarly dissertations.

Our Library provides access to the following collections:

  • Ebook Central – a collection of electronic books
  • ProQuest Central – an extensive collection of complete databases from all primary topical areas, including business, health and medicine, languages and literature, the social sciences, education, and science and technology, as well as basic titles from the fields of art, history, religion and philosophy; it also contains thousands of full-text newspapers and periodicals from around the world.
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (PQDT) Global – the most comprehensive collection of treatises and theses from around the world, offering millions of works from thousands of universities.

USC SHOAH FOUNDATION, VISUAL HISTORY ARCHIVE

The Visual History Archive is a set of audiovisual interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity. It is the largest collection of its type in the world, containing more than 55,000 source testimonies. Individual stories have been written down exactly as they were told by their actors, and each testimony is a unique, complete and personal presentation of life prior to, during, and following their experience of genocide.

VIRTUAL SCIENCE LIBRARY

The Virtual Science Library is a program that focuses on purchasing global knowledge resources and making them available to Polish academic and scientific institutions in the form of electronic periodicals, books and databases. The project is implemented by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling at the University of Warsaw.

The Virtual Science Library’s website includes detailed information on publishers, available collections of books and periodicals, bibliographic databases, and bibliometric tools (national licenses), together with direct references to the servers of individual producers.

Employees, collaborators and scholarship holders can access the majority of the database also from outside the Institute.
