In 2022, due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Awards Committee of the Witold Pilecki International Book Award established a special category. In 2023 the award went to the book authored by Zbigniew Parafianowicz.

On 24 February 2022, Zbigniew Parafianowicz was in Kyiv. He witnessed Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion, as well as the Western countries’ initial confusion regarding Russia’s actions. Through conversations with diplomats, soldiers, artists and ordinary citizens, he paints the picture of a society facing war, at the same time seeking to understand the roots of Ukrainian determination.
Zbigniew Parafianowicz is a journalist with “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” and co-author of books about Petro Poroshenko and Viktor Yanukovych. He has been concerned with Ukrainian affairs since 2003.
