Totalitarianism Across History and Disciplines | conference
We invite graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from all disciplines to submit proposals for papers regarding any aspect of totalitarianism, from a broad theoretical and historical perspective. The deadline for applications is 15.09.2022.
The history of confronting totalitarianism, both as a personal and a collective experience, delivers a universal message in the face of contemporary challenges of radical political evil. Totalitarian regimes marked their presence in the 20th Century as a phenomenon of industrial mass society, political violence and militarized mono-parties.
We invite graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from all disciplines to submit proposals for papers regarding any aspect of totalitarianism, from a broad theoretical and historical perspective, to be delivered at a conference organized jointly by the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw, Poland, and Valdosta State University, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington D.C.
In addition to invited panellists, guest speakers from Poland and the U.S. will deliver keynote papers and participate in round table discussions, bringing together broad expertise from both Western and East European perspectives and creating an invaluable cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary forum to explore all facets of the experience of totalitarianism.
Topics to be discussed may include but are not in any way limited to the following:
- theoretical framework of totalitarianism: its origins, evolution and future
- historical and contemporary totalitarian regimes and their comparison
- totalitarianism without a state - to what extent can the term "totalitarianism" be adopted?
- individual and collective experience of living under the totalitarian regimes
- transitions between authoritarian and totalitarian regimes
- patterns of creation and dissolution of totalitarian regimes
- transitional and international justice over totalitarian regimes
- foundations of the totalitarian regime and its aspects: ideology, secret services, bureaucracy, monoparty, mass and selective violence
- remembrance of totalitarianism: it's contemporary perception and socio-political influence
The conference will take place at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia, on 15-16 November 2022

The Face of Crime: The Life and Death of Roman Shukhevych | Damian Karol Markowski
In recent years, the Ukrainian central and local authorities have been actively commemorating Roman Shukhevych, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), perceiving him as a powerful symbol of the fight for Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union. Within the last few months, President Zelenskyy named a military unit after the UPA, while the Lviv Oblast Council declared 2027 as the year of the UPA and Roman Shukhevych. Crucially, however, Shukhevych – the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the commander of the UPA, and the deputy commander of the Nachtigall Battalion – had actively collaborated with Nazi Germany and was responsible for ethnic cleansings, pogroms of Lwów Jews, and the mass murder of Polish civilians in Volhynia in 1943. Among others, he was the author of an explicit order to murder civilians. We look back at his life story and involvement in these and other crimes.

Previously unpublished German archival materials from France’s ECPAD at the Pilecki Institute and the Warsaw Rising Museum
The Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor and the Warsaw Rising Museum have signed a strategic trilateral cooperation agreement with ECPAD (Établissement de Communication et de Production Audiovisuelle de la Défense / Defense Communication and Audiovisual Production Center), the French military audiovisual archive based in Ivry-sur-Seine, France. The agreement gives the Polish institutions access to unique Second World War photographs previously unseen in Poland, opens access to the vast holdings of the French archive, and launches a partnership of major significance for research into Polish history.

Karol Madaj appointed Director of the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor
Marta Cienkowska, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, has appointed Karol Madaj Director of the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valor in Warsaw. His five-year term will begin on 30 August 2026. From 1 September 2025, Karol Madaj served as the acting director of the Pilecki Institute.
